A Daily Walk With DietPower
Walking is the best exercise for weight loss. And the things you see!
Finn gets a ride down Middle River Road from Zane, his grandfather, who is babysitting for a week while his son and daughter-in-law are away on a cruise. When I caught up with them and Manny the dog ("He's named after Manny Ramirez," Zane said), they were headed from Zane's house on Daniels Drive to Finn's on Birch Road, just around the corner. What a lucky boy, to have a grandpa living so close!
Danbury is an odd mixture of transients and people who are longer-rooted. Because dozens of national and international corporate headquarters are located within easy commuting distance, many families come and go as their employers transfer them hither and yon. For the same reason, however, the offspring of long-time residents such as Zane and his wife, Deborah (they've lived on Daniels Drive since 1983) don't have to go far from the nest to make their living, regardless of education level. (Blue-collar jobs are almost as abundant as managerial and technical positions.)
Our town is also tightly woven into the global economy. In Zane and Deborah's case, this has proved both good and bad. Zane is Quality Manager for a German firm that competes in the U.S. with Underwriter Labs, a leader in the field of product compliance. Deborah was an IT project manager for the huge American health-management company Healthnet—until two months ago when her position was offshored. Now, like Peter, she's looking for a new job. .
About this page: Precisely at noon each day, I step out of my office for a 3.5-mile walk around my neighborhood in Danbury, Connecticut. I carry a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TX5 pocket camera with a Leica 10x optical zoom lens. My object is to make an interesting photograph of at least one thing that is different that day. I post the results here, hoping they will inspire you and your friends to walk, too. —Terry Dunkle, DietPower founder and CEO.
